Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said he has been “training” to run the United States since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
After Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren assailed Bloomberg during Tuesday’s debate for lacking Democratic bona fides and called him “the riskiest candidate standing on this stage,” Bloomberg argued he has the right kind of executive experience running the most populous city in the country.
“I have been training for this job since I stepped on the pile that was still smoldering on 9/11,” Bloomberg said. “I know what to do. I’ve shown I know how to run a country. I’ve run the city, which is almost the same size — bigger than most countries in the world.”
Bloomberg, a billionaire with socially liberal views and a history of jumping political affiliations, was first elected to be mayor in November 2001.
“I am the one choice that makes some sense. I have the experience, I have the resources, and I have the record,” the billionaire added. “And all of those sideshows that the senator wants to bring up have nothing to do with that,” he said. “When people hired me to run New York City, three times in an overwhelmingly Democratic, progressive city, they elected me again and again.”
