President Trump claimed that Matt Drudge, founder of top conservative news aggregation website the Drudge Report, is “starting to like” him again.
Speaking at a campaign rally in Colorado on Thursday, Trump began discussing his past debate performances during the 2016 presidential election. He touted a number of informal polls from various debates, including one on the Drudge Report.
Although it isn’t clear which debate the poll was from, Trump held a printed-out sheet that showed him leading after one of the Republican primary debates. Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas came in second, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio in third, and then-Ohio Gov. John Kasich, an outspoken Republican opponent of the president, came in fourth.
“OK. Here’s Drudge Report. Drudge, you’re starting to treat me good again. You’re starting to like me again. I like him,” Trump said. “Look: Trump. And Ted Cruz. I can say he came in second. You know, he was a great debater.”
“And Marco came in third,” he continued. “And a guy who I don’t like much — and they don’t like him to much in Ohio, either — Kasich. Kasich. He was way down. Way down. OK? Look, who won? Trump!” he said.
Trump’s comments about Drudge come after a report last month where, according to Columbia Journalism Review‘s Bob Norman, the 53-year-old Drudge seemed to distance himself from the president despite strong support for Trump during the 2016 election.
It is unclear what made Trump say that Drudge is “starting to like” him again at the Thursday rally.
